Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect how children learn, behave, and relate to others. Research consistently shows that trauma — whether from abuse, neglect, bereavement, domestic violence, or other experiences — can have a lasting impact on a young person’s ability to engage with education.
What is trauma-informed practice?
Trauma-informed practice means understanding that behaviour is communication. When a child is dysregulated, withdrawn, or struggling to engage, there is usually a reason — and that reason often sits outside the classroom. A trauma-informed approach shifts the question from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
This doesn’t mean lowering expectations. It means creating the conditions where children feel safe enough to learn, take risks, and build relationships.
Why it matters for Sheffield and Rotherham schools
Schools in Sheffield and Rotherham are supporting growing numbers of pupils with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs, EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance), and complex home lives. Many of these children don’t meet the threshold for specialist services but still need consistent, skilled support to stay in education and make progress.
How KRS Education delivers trauma-informed support
At KRS Education, trauma-informed practice is built into everything we do — not bolted on as an extra. Our Level 7 qualified support staff deliver therapeutic interventions across primary and secondary settings, including:

The impact
Schools that invest in trauma-informed support see improvements in attendance, behaviour, engagement, and academic progress. Pupils who feel safe and understood are more likely to stay in education, build positive relationships, and develop the resilience they need for the future.
