Functional Skills Maths & English in Chesterfield (Entry Level–Level 2)
If you’re based in Chesterfield and your teen needs a recognised Maths and English qualification, Functional Skills could be exactly the right route. Not every young person suits GCSEs — and that’s not a problem. Functional Skills are nationally recognised, practical qualifications that focus on the Maths and English skills your child will actually use in everyday life and at work.
We offer Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 — so your child starts at the right point and progresses at a pace that builds genuine confidence. Alongside the qualification, every learner follows our Work Skills Pathway: practical employability support including CV writing, interview preparation, and post-16 planning. The goal isn’t just a certificate — it’s a clear next step into college, an apprenticeship, or employment.
Why it works
Why Chesterfield Parents Choose Functional Skills
Confidence rebuild
Many of the young people we work with in Chesterfield have had a rough time with school. They’ve been told they’re behind, they’ve lost belief in themselves, and the idea of sitting another exam feels impossible. Functional Skills changes the conversation. We start where they are — not where someone thinks they should be — and build from there. Small wins first. Confidence follows.
Small wins, clear milestones
The level structure is one of the biggest strengths of Functional Skills. Entry Level 1 leads to Entry Level 2, then Entry Level 3, then Level 1, then Level 2. Each step is a genuine achievement — a qualification your child can be proud of. There’s no cliff edge, no all-or-nothing exam day. Just steady, visible progress that keeps motivation alive.
Real-life Maths and English
Functional Skills are built around real-world application. Your child learns to read forms, write emails, understand payslips, handle money, and communicate clearly in workplace situations. This isn’t abstract theory — it’s the Maths and English they’ll actually use when they start work, apply for a course, or manage their own finances.
Post-16 readiness — not just passing an exam
A qualification matters — but it’s not enough on its own. Our Chesterfield programme includes the Work Skills Pathway, which means your child also develops the practical skills employers and colleges look for: attendance, communication, CV writing, interview confidence, and a clear plan for what comes after 16. We prepare them for life, not just a test.
Who this is for
Who We Support in Chesterfield
Home educated KS4 teen
Your child is home educated and doing well in many areas — but Maths and English need structure, external accountability, and qualified teaching. They need a timetable that fits around home education, a small group of peers, and a teacher who understands how to make learning relevant. Our Chesterfield programme gives them exactly that — with clear progression and regular updates so you always know how they’re getting on.
Teen out of school
Your child has been out of school — whether through anxiety, attendance difficulties, or a breakdown in their previous placement. They need a gentler re-start: somewhere calm, with consistent staff, small numbers, and no pressure to “catch up” overnight. We meet them where they are, place them at the right level, and build from there. Engagement comes first. Progress follows naturally when a young person feels safe and supported.
Teen aiming for an apprenticeship
Your child knows what they want to do — but they need Maths and English to unlock the door. Many apprenticeships and training programmes require Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills. Our programme gets them qualified, but it also prepares them for the application process: CV writing, interview practice, and the confidence to present themselves well. We help them arrive ready, not just eligible.
The offer

Maths Functional Skills
NCFE-accredited Maths qualifications covering real-world numeracy, problem-solving, and practical application. From basic number work at Entry Level through to the skills employers and colleges require at Level 2.
English Functional Skills
NCFE-accredited English qualifications covering reading, writing, and communication for everyday life and work. Clear progression from Entry Level foundations through to Level 2 fluency.
Initial Assessment + Level Placement
Every learner completes a short diagnostic assessment before sessions begin. We place them at the right level from day one — no guesswork, no wasted time, no assumptions.
Weekly Teaching + Practice Tasks
Small-group sessions with qualified teachers, supported by practical tasks and activities that reinforce learning between sessions. Consistent, focused, and adapted to how your child actually learns.
Exam Readiness + Confidence Building
As learners approach their exam, we layer in targeted preparation — practice papers, timed tasks, and exam technique. But we also focus on confidence: helping them believe they can do it, not just hoping they will.
Work Skills Pathway
Alongside the qualification, every learner develops practical employability skills: CV writing, application support, interview practice, and workplace communication. They leave with a plan, not just a certificate.

Understanding the levels
Entry Level vs Level 1 vs Level 2: Which Level Is Right?
Most parents don’t know which level their child should start at — that’s completely normal. The levels aren’t about intelligence; they’re about where your child is right now and what they need to build on. Here’s a simple breakdown:
Entry Level 1–3
Building foundations + confidence
Entry Levels are about building the basics — reading simple texts, writing short pieces, understanding everyday numbers. For many learners, this is where confidence starts to grow. Each Entry Level is a real qualification, and each one is a stepping stone to the next. There’s no shame in starting here — it’s the right place for learners who need a solid foundation before moving forward.
Level 1
Everyday independence + employability
Level 1 is where Maths and English start to become genuinely useful in daily life. Learners can handle forms, write clearly, manage money, and communicate with confidence. It’s equivalent to a GCSE Grade 1–3 and is recognised by many employers and training providers. For some learners, Level 1 is the gateway to an apprenticeship or a training programme.
Level 2
Stronger qualification + wider doors
Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE Grade 4 (a Grade C in old terms). It’s the level many apprenticeships, college courses, and employers require. Achieving Level 2 opens the same doors as a GCSE pass — further education, apprenticeships, and employment. For most learners, Level 2 is the goal, and we support them every step of the way.
We place students using an initial assessment. There’s no pressure to start at a particular level — the right starting point is wherever your child is now. From there, we build a clear route forward.
Beyond the qualification
The Work Skills Pathway: Qualifications Open Doors — Skills Help Them Walk Through
A Functional Skills certificate is valuable — but it’s not the whole picture. The young people we work with in Chesterfield need more than a qualification. They need the practical skills, the confidence, and the habits that make the difference between getting an opportunity and making the most of it. That’s what the Work Skills Pathway delivers.
Five components
- Attendance and routine building — developing the habits that employers and colleges expect: turning up, being on time, and staying engaged.
- Communication and workplace behaviour — learning how to interact professionally, handle feedback, and work alongside others.
- CV basics + application support — building a CV from scratch, writing covering letters, and completing application forms with confidence.
- Interview practice — mock interviews, body language coaching, and learning how to talk about strengths and experience.
- Goal setting + next-step planning (post-16) — identifying what comes next and building a realistic plan to get there, whether that's college, an apprenticeship, or employment.
Chesterfield learner examples
One learner used Level 1 Functional Skills as a stepping stone into a local training programme. They’d been out of education for over a year, and the combination of structured learning and work skills coaching gave them the confidence to apply — and the skills to succeed once they got there.
Another learner built confidence steadily from Entry Level 3, then progressed to Level 2 while preparing for interviews. By the time they finished, they had a qualification, a CV, and a clear plan — and they’d practised talking about themselves in a way that felt natural, not forced.
The process
How Functional Skills Works in Chesterfield
Five clear steps — from your first conversation to your child leaving with a qualification and a plan for what comes next.
Free call — your goals, their context
We start with a relaxed 20-minute conversation. No forms, no commitment. We want to understand your child's situation: what's been tried before, what's working, what isn't, and what you're hoping for after 16. This call helps us work out whether Functional Skills is the right route — and if so, what level and timetable would suit best.
Baseline check — finding the starting point
Before any sessions begin, your child completes a short diagnostic assessment in Maths and English. This tells us exactly where they are — Entry Level 1, 2, 3, Level 1 or Level 2. No guesswork, no assumptions. We place every learner at the right level so they start with confidence and build from a solid foundation.
Personal plan — Maths, English + work skills
We build a plan around your child's starting point, goals, and learning style. This covers which levels they'll work through, how many sessions per week, and how the Work Skills Pathway fits alongside their Maths and English. You'll know exactly what to expect — and so will they.
Weekly delivery — teaching + practice
Your child joins small-group sessions with qualified teachers. Each week builds on the last, with a blend of taught content, real-world tasks, and practical activities. Materials are flexible — digital or paper-based — and progress is tracked with clear milestones so you can see it happening. Regular updates keep you informed throughout.
Progression — exam readiness + post-16 plan
As your child approaches their exam, we layer in targeted preparation: practice papers, timed tasks, and exam technique. At the same time, we finalise their post-16 plan — whether that's college, an apprenticeship, or employment. They don't just leave with a qualification; they leave with a direction and the confidence to follow it.
We understand
If You’re Worried, You’re Not Alone
“My child has lost confidence”
We hear this more than anything else. When a young person has been told they’re behind, or they’ve had a difficult experience in school, confidence is often the first thing to go. Our approach is simple: we start where they are, we celebrate progress (not just results), and we build trust through consistency. Small groups, familiar staff, calm expectations. Confidence doesn’t come from being pushed harder — it comes from feeling safe enough to try.
“We’ve tried tutors before”
Tutoring can work well for some learners — but for others, it’s not enough. If your child needs more than academic input — if they need structure, social interaction, consistent expectations, and someone who understands SEND and SEMH — then a tutor alone won’t fill the gap. Our programme combines qualified teaching with wellbeing awareness, small-group dynamics, and a clear pathway. It’s structured provision, not just extra lessons.
“I don’t want pressure or shame”
Neither do we. Our environment is calm, structured, and built around consistent expectations — not pressure. We don’t compare learners to each other, we don’t use shame as a motivator, and we don’t expect perfection. What we do expect is effort, respect, and a willingness to try. In return, your child gets patience, encouragement, and adults who genuinely care about their progress.
