Functional Skills pathway

Functional Skills Maths & English for Home Educated Students

Your home educated teenager needs a recognised qualification in Maths and Englishand a clear pathway to post-16 work. Our Functional Skills courses are built for KS4 learners who need something more practical and achievable than GCSEs, without losing credibility.

Functional Skills are nationally recognised qualifications that focus on real-life skills: reading and writing for everyday situations, and maths you can actually use at work and in adult life. We offer Entry Level 1, 2, 3 + Level 1, 2, with a clear step-by-step route so your child can build confidence and progress at the right pace. Everything is designed to be flexible and outcome-focused: part-time options, supportive teaching, and a calm approach that avoids unnecessary pressure. Alongside the qualification, we emphasise our Work Skills Pathway, helping learners connect Maths and English to employability, routines, and next steps after 16.

Functional Skills Maths and English: The Challenges Home Educated Students Face

We hear the same concerns from parents again and again. Here’s how we address them.

01

GCSEs aren't working for us

Home educated students often don't fit the GCSE mould — and that's not a failure, it's a reality. GCSEs were designed for a particular kind of learner in a particular kind of setting. Functional Skills are a genuine, nationally recognised alternative. They focus on practical Maths and English skills that matter in real life and at work, and they open the same doors — college, apprenticeships, employment — without the pressure of a system that was never built with your child in mind.

02

We need structure and support

Home education takes real commitment, and parents shouldn't have to do it all alone. Our Functional Skills programme gives your child a structured timetable, qualified teachers, and small-group sessions designed around how they actually learn. You stay in control of your child's education — we provide the expert teaching, the clear progression, and the regular updates that make the whole thing manageable.

03

What comes after?

It's the question every home educating parent asks: will this qualification actually lead somewhere? The answer is yes. Functional Skills Level 2 is accepted by colleges, apprenticeship providers, and employers across the country. Our Work Skills Pathway goes further — building CVs, interview skills, and post-16 planning alongside the qualification, so your child doesn't just pass an exam. They leave ready for what's next.

The core offer

Entry Level Functional Skills Through to Level 2: What We Deliver

Four pillars that make our Functional Skills programme different — accredited qualifications, flexible delivery, expert teaching, and a clear pathway to work.

01

Accredited Qualifications

Every Functional Skills qualification we deliver is NCFE-accredited and nationally recognised. We offer Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 in both Maths and English. These aren’t watered-down alternatives — they’re respected by employers, colleges and apprenticeship providers across the country. Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE Grade 4 (a Grade C in old terms) and opens the same doors: further education, apprenticeships and employment.

02

Flexible Delivery

Home education doesn’t follow a school timetable — and neither do we. Our Functional Skills courses are available online, blended or in small-group sessions, designed to fit around your family’s routine. Every learner starts with a pre-assessment so we understand exactly where they are and place them at the right level from day one. No guesswork, no wasted time — just a clear starting point and a structured route forward.

03

Expert Teaching

Our Functional Skills sessions are delivered by qualified, experienced teachers who understand how to make Maths and English relevant and accessible. This isn’t exam-factory teaching — we focus on real-world application so learners can use what they learn in everyday life and at work. Small groups mean every student gets the attention they need, with teaching adapted to how they actually learn. Practical, supportive and focused on building genuine confidence.

04

Work Skills Pathway

A qualification is only part of the picture. Our Work Skills Pathway goes beyond the exam — building the practical skills young people need to succeed after education. That means CV writing, job applications, interview preparation and apprenticeship readiness, all woven into the programme alongside Maths and English. By the time a learner finishes, they don’t just have a certificate — they have a plan, the confidence to follow it, and the tools to make it happen.

Entry Level Functional Skills Through to Level 1 Functional Skills and Beyond

Every learner starts at the right level and progresses step by step. Here’s what each stage covers.

Entry Level 1

Foundation level for learners building confidence in Maths and English. Focus on everyday skills and basic communication.

Entry Level 2

Progressive level with more complex tasks. Building towards independence in reading, writing, and numeracy.

Entry Level 3

Advanced entry level. Preparing learners for Level 1 with stronger skills in problem-solving and communication.

Level 1

Nationally recognised qualification. Equivalent to GCSE Grade 1–3. Practical Maths and English skills for work and everyday life. Gateway to Level 2.

Level 2

Equivalent to a GCSE Grade 4 (a Grade C in old terms). Opens doors to college courses, apprenticeships, and employment. The goal for most learners.

The process

How Entry Level Functional Skills and Level 1 Functional Skills Work for Home Educated Students

Four clear steps — from your first conversation to your child leaving with a qualification and a plan for what comes next.

01
Step 01

Initial Chat

We start with a relaxed conversation — no forms, no pressure. We want to understand your child's needs, their current level in Maths and English, and what they're hoping to achieve after 16. Whether that's college, an apprenticeship, or employment, this chat helps us build a clear picture so we can put the right plan in place from day one.

02
Step 02

Pre-Assessment

Before any sessions begin, your child completes a short diagnostic assessment. This tells us exactly where they are — whether that's Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2. No guesswork, no wasted time. We place every learner at the right level so they start with confidence and progress at the right pace.

03
Step 03

Structured Learning

Your child joins weekly sessions with a small group of peers. We use a blend of taught sessions, real-world tasks, and practical activities that make Maths and English relevant and achievable. Materials are flexible — digital or paper-based — and every session builds on the last, with clear milestones so you can see progress happening.

04
Step 04

Progression & Support

We don't just teach and disappear. Regular check-ins track how your child is doing, and we adjust the plan if needed. As they progress, we layer in exam preparation, work skills coaching, and post-16 planning — so when the time comes, they're not just qualified, they're ready for what's next.

Beyond the qualification

The Work Skills Pathway: Functional Skills Maths and English Plus Coaching for Real Outcomes

A Functional Skills qualification is only part of the picture. Our Work Skills Pathway combines accredited Maths and English with practical work skills coaching — so your child doesn’t just pass an exam. They leave with a plan, the confidence to follow it, and the tools to make it happen.

What the pathway includes

  • Functional Skills qualification (Entry Level 1 through to Level 2) in Maths and English — NCFE accredited and nationally recognised.
  • Work skills coaching: CV writing, job applications, interview preparation, and workplace readiness.
  • Vocational options alongside core learning — Sports (up to Level 2), Health and Social Care, Hair and Beauty, and CSCS card training.
  • Post-16 planning built into every placement — so your child leaves with a qualification and a direction.

Where it leads: post-16 outcomes

100% of our Year 11 students progressed to further education, apprenticeships, or employment. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

🎓

Apprenticeships

Several learners have moved directly into apprenticeships after achieving Level 1 or Level 2 — in retail, construction, and health and social care.

📚

Further Education

Learners who weren't ready for college when they started with us have gone on to enrol in college courses — with the qualifications and confidence to succeed.

💼

Employment

Some learners have moved straight into employment, equipped with Functional Skills, a CV, interview experience, and the soft skills employers value.

🛠️

Training Programmes

Others have progressed into specialist training programmes — including construction (CSCS), digital skills, and vocational pathways aligned to their interests.

Real-world examples

One student completed Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English and moved into a retail apprenticeship within weeks of finishing. They used the CV and interview preparation from the programme to secure the place themselves.

Another learner progressed from Entry Level 3 to Level 2 over two terms and is now studying digital skills at college — something they didn’t believe was possible when they started with us.
