When a child has SEND or SEMH needs, the difference between an intervention that works and one that doesn’t often comes down to a few key factors: the right environment, the right staff, and the right approach. Evidence-based practice in SEND and SEMH support isn’t about following a rigid script — it’s about combining what research tells us works with what we know about the individual child in front of us.
At KRS Education, we deliver in-school SEND and SEMH interventions for primary schools in Sheffield and Chesterfield. Here’s what we’ve learned about what actually works — and how we evidence it.
What does “evidence-based” mean in SEND and SEMH support?
Evidence-based practice means using approaches that have been shown to be effective — through research, through measurable outcomes, and through the professional judgement of experienced practitioners. In SEND and SEMH support, this means:
- Structured, small-group interventions delivered in school by trained staff.
- Clear baseline assessments aligned to EHCP outcomes and SMART targets.
- Regular review cycles — assess, plan, do, review — with measurable progress data.
- Trauma-informed approaches that build trust before pushing academic progress.
- Art Therapy, Play Therapy and Sport Therapy for emotional regulation and wellbeing.
- Consistent adult relationships — the same staff, the same routines, every session.
- Weekly reporting to schools and families so everyone stays informed.
The SEND needs we support in primary schools
Our in-school interventions are designed for primary pupils with a wide range of SEND and SEMH needs, including:
How we prove impact
Schools and local authorities need to be able to evidence the impact of SEND interventions — for EHCP reviews, for OFSTED, and for families. Here’s how we make that straightforward:
- Baseline and ongoing assessment data shared with schools and local authorities.
- Half-termly progress reports aligned to EHCP outcomes.
- Attendance and engagement tracking across every placement.
- Behaviour and wellbeing measures captured and reviewed regularly.
- 100% of Year 11 students progressed to further education, apprenticeships or employment.
EHCP-aligned delivery
For pupils with EHCPs, our interventions are planned and delivered in direct alignment with their outcomes. We work with schools to understand what the EHCP requires, build our sessions around those outcomes, and provide clear evidence of progress at review points.
For pupils without EHCPs who are on the SEN register or receiving SEN support, we use the same structured approach — baseline, targets, delivery, review — to ensure every child’s progress is tracked and evidenced.
