Beyond the Register

Building school systems that improve attendance and tackle EBSA.

Attendance is more than a number on a register. It’s a safeguarding issue, a wellbeing indicator, and often the first sign that something deeper is going on for a child or family. Beyond the Register is a practical, interactive CPD session that equips all school staff with the knowledge, language, and strategies to improve attendance, strengthen relationships with families, and ensure the school is backed up and supported.

This session is delivered in person at your school, educational setting, or business. At approximately 90 minutes, it’s the perfect length for a round-robin INSET day — run it alongside our other CPD courses or with your own trainers.

Beyond the Register — session objectives

What will you achieve?

By the end of this session, your staff will be able to:

  • View attendance as a safeguarding and support mechanism.
  • Identify the root causes of absence (including EBSA).
  • Apply threshold-based interventions effectively.
  • Strengthen staff consistency in reintegration.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for all school staff — not just senior leaders or attendance officers. Attendance improves when every adult in the building understands their role.

Teachers
Teaching Assistants & Support Staff
Office & Admin Staff
Pastoral Teams
SENDCos & Inclusion Managers
Senior Leadership Teams
Anyone who comes into contact with students

What does the session cover?

  • Attendance as a safeguarding issue — why the register is just the starting point.
  • Root causes of absence: EBSA, practical barriers, disengagement, and hidden needs.
  • Pattern spotting — using data to identify early warning signs before absence becomes persistent.
  • Tiered responses — matching the level of intervention to the level of need.
  • Positive, empathetic communication with families — building trust, not blame.
  • Staff consistency in reintegration — what every adult needs to do (and say) when a child returns.
  • Practical scenarios and terminology reviews — real situations, real language, real solutions.
  • Action planning — staff leave with a clear, simple plan they can use straight away.
  • Record-keeping and critical reflection — building a culture of accountability and support.

Practical details

  • Approx. 90 minutes — perfect for a round-robin INSET day alongside other CPD sessions or trainers.
  • Delivered in your setting — schools, educational settings, or businesses.
  • Interactive and practical — not a lecture. Staff engage, discuss, and plan.
  • Includes a short action plan template for immediate next steps.
  • CPD accredited — 2 CPD Credits.

Why this matters

Schools that treat attendance as a whole-school responsibility — not just a leadership task — see better outcomes. When every member of staff understands why a child might not be coming in, and knows what to say and do when they return, attendance improves, relationships with families strengthen, and the school is in a much stronger position if things escalate.

This session gives your team the tools, the language, and the confidence to make that happen.

Pair it with our other CPD sessions

At ~90 minutes, Beyond the Register is ideal for a round-robin INSET day. Pair it with our other on-site CPD courses — Conflict Management & De-escalation, Understanding Neurodiversity, or Understanding Cuckooing — for a full day of practical, impactful staff training.
